Curcuma Thailand
What is Curcuma?

Plant genus “Curcuma,” Species “Alismatifola,” Family “Zingiberaceae” are native to Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. There are 29 genera in this family. In Thailand, species of curcuma can be observed countrywide from sea level in the South to mountainous areas in the North. Habitats and environmental conditions vary.
The life cycle begins when the corms start to sprout at the end of the dormant period. In Thailand, this period coincides with the beginning of the rainy season in April or May. The vegetative growth period will take about 2 months after which the plants will start to flower. The beautiful parts of curcuma are the bracts. The true flowers are quite small and emerge from each bract, the number of bracts vary from 2-4, depending on the variety. The phyllotaxy or arrangement of the bracts and bract color depends on the variety.

Curcuma is a perennial herb having a fleshy corm with fibrous and fleshy ovoid storage roots. The plant has 6-8 lanceolate leaves with a pseudostem formed from leaf sheaths. The inflorescence is a splendid compact spike with lotus flower-like bracts, and a long stalk of 60-70 cm. Basal bracts are green and these originally bore true white flowers with purple lips while the top bracts were purplish pink. As breeding techniques have improved many different shades and colors have become available. Curcuma can be used as a cut flowers and pot (bedding) plant. Planting in a garden en-mass creates a distinctive display of "Thai Tulips."
Spacing at 30 x 30 cms spacing is recommended.
